It's true! Small businesses can compete against the retail Goliaths, but only with a small business marketing plan that is lean and mean. And opportunistic. And visible.

While headlines scream about the death of the small business, look around any town and you can see the individually-owned storefronts up and down the street. But to keep selling, the small business owner must continually be originating new marketing ideas and re-evaluating current ones. The small business owner never stops marketing.

Advertising may be the most visible aspect of the marketing plan, but successful marketing of the small business includes many other techniques. For businesses of this size, visibility is of paramount importance. It is no coincidence that many of the community's most active civic boosters are small business owners. By nature, the person who has the guts and smarts to run a small business is the same type of person who is front-and-center in most decision-making. This person trusts their instincts and is not afraid to voice their opinions. They have ideas, good ideas, about how things should be done, especially when it might affect their business, whether this be community development, civic planning, or charitable considerations.

The small business owner is the one that everyone greets when walking into the neighborhood tavern, who knows the names of the clerks at the grocery store, who is on a first name basis with the owner of every other store on the street. This person keeps an eye on the neighbors, helps the elderly bring in their trash cans, will take the time to return a loose dog to his owner. This isn't saying that the small business owner is selfless or a do-gooder, although this may be true. But the successful small business owner is someone who likes to be around people, who is probably very gregarious, and who is naturally inclined to offer services. After all, this person is in business to offer services or products. This comes naturally to this type of person, both during and after business hours.

The owner of the small business is always on the lookout for ways to increase sales. This is a competition and the small business owner is naturally competitive. You never know when a new opportunity will appear and the small business owner takes great delight in discovering an unexpected opportunity. Like a kid with a new toy, this person will examine and exclaim over this idea. Nothing gets the small business owner more excited than a new route to sell. More sales mean more money, and while the entrepreneur loves the money, this person also likes the idea of winning for winning's sake.

You know this person. If you are running a successful small business, this person is you. If you are struggling, stop beating the dead marketing ideas. Tweak your message or your means and get out there. The smart entrepreneur is always ready for the new challenge. For this person, a new challenge is a new adventure. That is the hallmark of the entrepreneurial small business owner.
