Leaders are the ignition for their businesses, the instigators, and the match that lights the flame. Leaders are responsible for their departments, teams, and for progress in their businesses. The importance of leadership in business means that leaders must be more than qualified if they are to assume that position.

It is common practice for star performers to be promoted into leadership positions because of the results of their previous work. While this may result in a progressive company, in many cases the star performer is unqualified and will stumble over several pitfalls before ever making substantial progress. This is due to their lack of qualifications to lead. Just because an employee is capable of performing well, and producing results does not mean they are equipped to adequately lead a team of their peers.

Leadership is a challenging task that requires several basic skills to be most effective, and while some skills can be taught, the best leaders are those who naturally inhibit behaviors that make a great leader. Successful leaders must be able to communicate, motivate, and develop their teammates and employees. For some, these skills do not come naturally and they will require extra development in order to be a leader. Assessments can reveal who possesses natural leadership abilities, and what areas an individual would need to develop in order to be a sufficient leader.

Communication may be one of the greatest challenges in business today. People assume that because technology has provided numerous conveniences to communication, that communicating has become easier or simpler. This is a misconception. In order to communicate effectively, leaders need to be able to listen as often as they speak. This requires thinking before speaking, and interpreting what each professional interaction means.

Some people are naturally gifted with understanding and the ability to communicate, and assessments can lead you to those people. Being social and being able to communicate effectively are different concepts. A great leader conveys messages easily, listens carefully, and is concerned with understanding exactly what their coworkers are trying to say. This attention to detail is what separates the leaders from the rest of the group.

Leaders also need to be able to motivate. Employees greatly appreciate when their leaders support them. Great leaders are cheerleaders, and will motivate their employees to be as successful as possible at all times. Motivating does not mean a simple pat on the back; it requires a substantial professional relationship and a mutual respect between leader and employee to be truly effective. Motivating requires verbal and non-verbal communication in order to make an impact.

By assessing employees early, leaders will become apparent early. Motivating requires someone with a naturally optimistic outlook, positive attitude, and willingness to work hard to achieve their goals. Assessments will quantify a person's natural tendencies, and will enable hiring managers to pinpoint exactly who would make an efficient leader based on those behaviors.

A leader's main priority should be to continually develop their team members. Development can occur through a number of methods, and it is a leader's job to ensure that their employees are being groomed into valuable professionals. The key to developing others is being able to identify their needs, and being able to construct a plan to meet or exceed those needs. This is the sign of a true leader. Developing others is no easy task, but if a leader is naturally equipped with the behaviors and skills necessary to help others, they will be more effective at their job.

Leadership is a complex and often arduous task, but with appropriate skills and behaviors it doesn't have to be. Leaders should be able to communicate, motivate and develop their team members in order to make the team as productive as possible. Assessments can identify leaders before they are promoted into those positions.

A natural leader may not be as obvious as one thinks, and it is important to identify the qualities that compose a leader before giving someone the control of an entire team or division. Leaders are the foundation of business, and finding them is as easy as assessing the talent you already have.
