There are many times in life when being a women pays dividends! One of these times is vehicle insurance, as despite the protests of men women are offered lower insurance for their car, motorbike, van or any other mode of transport they choose to drive.

Cries of 'unfair and sexist' continue to be heard from men who believe that women are given special considerations when they are offered insurance, however insurance companies are acting within the law when they offer cheaper rates to women drivers.

The whole issue of lady driver insurance came to a head when insurance companies, which only offer policies to women where criticised for being sexist. However, it was found that they were acting legally as the reasons for being able to offer lower rates was substantiated by a number of studies and researches which showed that women were seen as a lower insurance risk due to the reduced number of insurance claims made compared to their male counterparts.

Whilst men continue to believe the law unfair there are also many women who believe in equal rights and yet few quibble and ask to pay the same premiums as men! And why should they? It is unlikely that many men would do the same! Contentious? Yes! Illegal no! Therefore as the law stands Female driver insurance looks set to remain at a lower rate than men's for the next few years at least!

The reasoning behind the decisions made where based on statistics and data which showed that women are safer drivers than men. They are less likely to be involved in a major accident, possibly due to the data which showed that the majority of women drive within the speed limits more than men and that women are also less likely to take risks when driving.

However, not all female driver insurance is cheaper than men's. Women who have penalty points on their licence for speeding and those who make insurance claims will also see their premiums rise in exactly the same way as a man's. Insurance companies offer lower rates to women who are seen as less of a risk, once they become a high risk they will have to pay more for their insurance and furthermore women who have been banned from driving will find it just as difficult as a man to find cheap insurance once their banned has been lifted.

In direct competition to the women only insurance companies which are currently flooding the insurance market, all the major insurance companies are also offering cheaper rates for female driver insurance policies. As such it is not always the women only insurers who are offering the best deals. The same principles of shopping around for the best deals applies to both genders. If women want to have their handbag covered by their insurance policy they will find that any insurance company will happily supply them with the appropriate amount of cover.

Therefore it is recommended by money experts when it comes to female driver insurance the best course of action is not to play the old stereotype of a defenceless women who knows little about cars or insurance but to make it very clear to insurers that they are savvy shoppers and will look for the best deals wherever they can find it
