A couple of years ago, we suffered through an infestation of mice. At first, we heard a little scratching in the walls at night, and then the occasional squeak. Soon, the scratching would run all night long, and from the sound we could almost pinpoint where they were. They then got bold and started making their forays into the open parts of the house.
One of us would enter a room, and there would be a gray dash right along the side of the wall, heading behind the furniture. Moving the furniture revealed little holes in the wall where the little beasts could scurry away. We started finding droppings, and with small children in the house, that was absolutely unacceptable. Actually, it was unacceptable for them to be anywhere near me, let alone my children. We started laying sticky mouse traps and caught many of them, but what we really needed was a New Jersey pest control service.
One thing that I really got out of the experience was a desensitization towards small furry creatures. I have nothing against domesticated animals, or even animals in their natural habitat, but I have no love and little mercy for anything that infests my home. The first several mice we caught, I would feel a bit sympathetic. They looked so sad, with their big brown eyes and rapid breathing, I used to put them in the garbage can outside, hoping that they would free themselves up from the trap once it had sat for a while.
But they just kept coming; they refused to move on to some other better place for them. They were in my place, and that made me ruthless. We started using poison and started ensuring that they would never escape from the humane traps. Eventually we won, but it would have been so much easier if we had used professional exterminators.
We were free from trouble for several years, but then, at the beginning of the last winter we spent in that home, we heard the scratching again. No more waiting and hoping that they would go away on their own. We went to an immediate Code Red and left poison in strategic spots. We didn't even bother with the humane traps.
We knew that as long as we could poison the one or two that had made their way in, we could stop them from breeding and send a message to their brethren that this was not a welcome place. It seemed to have worked, but if it ever happens in our new home, I just may go straight to the professionals.
