I grew up in Wyoming, and have spent a lot of time in and around the Rocky Mountains, especially in the national parks. These pristine areas look largely like they did when the first settlers moved in over 100 years ago.
Of course, the modern conveniences are all near by, but if you want to escape to big skies, wide open plains, and amazing wildlife, these areas still exist in abundance.
I grew up in a city, but in about an hour, my father and I could be out at our friend's ranch. We were welcome guests, especially when it came time to brand, tag, and castrate that year's calves. It was hard work, and ranchers from around the area used to pitch in to help each other.
My job, as a preteen, was mainly to help herd the calves through the chutes and into the cage where they could be tipped and lifted for branding. When we first started helping, the calves were roped and held down by hand, but as the herd grew in size, the cage became far more efficient.
We worked hard all day, and every evening was a celebration with beer for the adults, soft drinks for us, and loads and loads of good food for everyone.
I was reminded of all of this again when I recently got back in touch with an old friend of mine. We had worked together in Japan, and I was surprised to hear that he was living in Montana.
I tracked down his number and called him, and in the course of the conversation, I asked him why he chose to live where he did, in a small community south of Missoula. He told me that after living in Phoenix, he wanted to get back to a place with clear air and a clean environment. Originally from Utah, he returned home, only to find that the place had changed, and not to his liking.
He heard about opportunities in Montana from a friend and drove up there with is wife to see what it was like. If fit the bill of what he was looking for, and so he and his family relocated to a ranching area in the Bitterroot Valley. He was now in utopia and had no desire to leave.
If you are looking for a ranch for sale, I recommend the Big Sky country of Montana. The state is beautiful and the environment clean and pure. Besides, where else can you wake up to find a buffalo in your front yard?
