Royal LePage North Heritage Realty raises over $37,000 for women’s shelters

Royal LePage North Heritage Realty proudly announced that its 3rd Annual Charity Golf Tournament raised over $37,000 in support of the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation. Every dollar will go directly to YWCA Genevra House in Sudbury and Haven House women’s shelter on Manitoulin Island.

“I am exceptionally proud of our team for far surpassing this year’s fundraising goal and for once again helping make a real difference for local families seeking safe shelter,” said Luc Bock, broker of record.

He added, “We know there is much work to be done in ending intimate partner violence in Canada, but our brokerage is steadfast in our commitment to funding the hope and healing of those affected in our community.”

Royal LePage Royal City Realty raises $37,000 at Summer Soirée for local shelter

Royal LePage Royal City Realty raised $37,000 at this year’s Summer Soirée in support of the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation. All funds will go directly to Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis to support critical services for women and children escaping intimate partner violence.

The annual event, championed and led by broker of record Jeff Morley, has raised $165,000 since it began in 2018.

“We are deeply grateful to our amazing community for joining us for this elegant evening under the stars, which will truly make a difference in the lives of so many local families,” said Gillian Atkinson, broker/manager. “Our Royal City volunteers, led by Lisa Klempner and a dedicated group of agents, are the magic that makes this event possible.”

EXIT Realty marks $8M milestone through Spirit of EXIT charitable giving

EXIT Realty Corp. International has surpassed $8 million in donations through its Spirit of EXIT Charitable Program, highlighting the company’s dedication to community impact across North America.

“This milestone is a testament to the collective generosity and passion of our EXIT family, who continuously seek out ways to make a difference beyond real estate,” said Tami Bonnell, co-chair of EXIT Realty.

The program matches funds raised by local offices to support causes meaningful to them. In 2024, donations supported children, community programs, medical support, veterans, Habitat for Humanity, medical research, cancer initiatives and animal welfare.

A portion of each transaction fee is held in trust and matched up to $3,000 per initiative.

“Since stepping into the directorship earlier this year, I’ve seen firsthand the courage and heart behind these efforts,” said Sharron Richardson, vice-president of broker services. “Their commitment to creating meaningful change in their communities is truly inspiring.”

(Marc Cioffi)

When Marc Cioffi was growing up, he couldn’t imagine joining his family in the real estate business, despite his father and cousin’s efforts to lure him into the industry.

“I never had much interest in real estate. I always wanted to become a police officer because I wanted to serve my community and make a difference,” says the broker of record of Sutton Group Kings Cross in Vaughan, Ont. “I’ve always had a strong protective drive.”

He joined the Toronto Police Service in 1999 and has had a long “very great career in all different aspects of policing,” says Toronto-born and raised Cioffi.

In 2016, his father, Lucio, began thinking about retirement and asked him to get his real estate licence as part of the succession plan for the business he had enjoyed for 35 years.

“I still wasn’t interested,” Cioffi says. But the good son took a holiday from his police career to study real estate. In-person training was required at the time. He got his licence in 2018.

“An easy transition”

Much to his surprise, during his studies, he realized he liked the legal aspects of the real estate profession.

“It hooked me. I really enjoyed it,” he says. “The ethics and integrity aspect (of policing) serve me well, but the legal aspect is also beneficial. The legal documentation in both careers must be completed accurately and consistently with the law. I found that part to be a very easy transition.”

However, when he first started working as a realtor, Cioffi says he was “disappointed with the lack of ethics in the industry.”

His wife, Maria, suggested he open a small brokerage that would allow him to control the type of company he wanted, one that would align value, integrity and ethics.

Taking the plunge

In 2020, he, his father, and cousin, Angelo, opened Kinsby Real Estate in Vaughan.

Next, Cioffi convinced his wife to get her licence. The family brokerage of four was busy. They didn’t recruit; instead working on their own to manage their client base, many of whom were first responders and had learned word-of-mouth about Cioffi’s special attention to their community.

Finding a niche

Cioffi says his law enforcement/first responder background adds a layer of trust and integrity that his like-minded clients want. “We chiseled out a niche,” he says.

Sutton Group Kings Cross offers discounts and services tailored to police officers, firefighters, paramedics, military personnel, and healthcare workers, and provides flexible scheduling with a team that’s available 24/7 to accommodate shift work. The brokerage has civilian clients as well, but most of them are referred by first responders.

Instead of specializing in a geographic area, the brokerage focuses on the needs of its clients. First responders don’t like to live where they work, Cioffi says.

“They have a high tolerance for a higher commute.” That means his team helps clients buy and sell everywhere in Southern Ontario.

Finding a home for the agency

In 2024, it was time to explore adopting a brand name, so Cioffi and his wife interviewed several companies. “We ended up choosing Sutton Group and in January 2025 rebranded from a small brokerage to Sutton Group Kings Cross,” he says.

They chose Sutton Group because it’s a truly 100-per-cent Canadian brand and is a huge supporter of first responders through its charity work, he says.

It supports military relocation programs and has a referral program within the brand that makes transitions easier. They also liked Sutton Group’s client-centric business model.

Everything, Cioffi says, aligns with his values.

Business is taking off

In part because of expansion supported by Sutton, Cioffi says that in six months, his brokerage has doubled in size.

“When we started, there were two first responders (of four agents). We now have 12 agents. Six are first responders.”

Cioffi says first responders have different needs. At his brokerage, “everyone who attends an open house is required to provide identification with a driver’s license. The normal civilian may think that’s not necessary, but for first responders, it’s their home and they have extra sensitivities to safety.”

To ensure everyone understands clients’ needs, “we have a three-stage interview process followed by a 90-day onboarding program where the individual will have tasks to complete.”

Much like the first-responder jobs that require a probationary period, the brokerage evaluates during onboarding to ensure the agents have what it takes to serve the community.

“To my knowledge, we’re the only ones who cater to first responders,” Cioffi says.

“Sutton Group is so excited. They plan on implementing (a first-responders program) nationwide with special training to handle first responder clients.”

In addition to relying on referrals, the brokerage advertises in magazines and on websites, and on social media that cater to the first responders.

Giving back to the community

Sutton Kings Cross (currently based in Vaughan but soon to be moving to new digs in King Township) supports first responders through charity events such as Gloves Up, a boxing event that raises money for Beyond the Blue, which supports first responder mental health.

It also supports the annual Holly Jones golf tournament. Funds raised benefit the Dovercourt Girls and Boys Club. The company also sponsors police and fire sports teams.

“Don’t let anyone tell you ‘you can’t.’”

Anyone changing careers is likely to meet naysayers, but Cioffi offers this advice about making a career change: “Don’t let anyone tell you ‘you can’t’ transition from one career to another. That’s the person talking to you telling you they can’t. If you are passionate and motivated, you can be effective.”

Jason Wheeldon of Royal LePage East Kootenay Realty was recently awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal in recognition of his decades-long commitment to volunteerism and community service in Cranbrook, British Columbia.

On September 9, Kootenay MP Rob Morrison presented medals and certificates at his constituency office to several upstanding citizens, including Wheeldon who was awarded as a testament to his dedication to making Cranbrook a better place to live.

Wheeldon’s community involvement

Wheeldon’s efforts have included numerous local initiatives like the annual Turkey Drive, which raises essential funds for the Cranbrook Food Bank and the Salvation Army. He has helped to build local parks as a charter member of the Sunrise Rotary Club, coach youth sports and organize local festivals.

Wheeldon is involved with organizations such as the Kinsmen Club, Big Brothers and Sisters, the Canadian Mental Health Association and the Cranbrook Youth Ambassador Program.

Family credited with much of his success

Reflecting on his journey, Jason shares: “It all began back in 1993 when I became a Big Brother and chaired the Kin Clubs’ March of Dimes fundraiser. Since then, I’ve had the privilege to work on many meaningful projects, like co-founding the Cranbrook Chamber Turkey Drive, which continues to support those in need. The growth of this initiative has been incredible, and it’s a true community effort that humbles me every year.”

Wheeldon credits much of his success to his family. Alongside his wife, who created a backpack food program for local schools, he has worked tirelessly to support the causes close to their hearts. Their dedication to Cranbrook has been a powerful example for their two daughters.

How a near-death experience inspired realtor Ken Welte to become an emergency medical responder https://realestatemagazine.ca/how-a-near-death-experience-inspired-realtor-ken-welte-to-become-an-emergency-medical-responder/ https://realestatemagazine.ca/how-a-near-death-experience-inspired-realtor-ken-welte-to-become-an-emergency-medical-responder/#respond Mon, 16 Sep 2024 04:01:25 +0000 https://realestatemagazine.ca/?p=34387 After a life-threatening accident, Ken Welte wanted to give back — he now offers the same life-saving support that helped him and his wife survive

Ken Welte, an agent with Sutton West Coast Realty, recently achieved his Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification and earned his Emergency Medical Assistance (EMA) license. This follows a life-changing experience in 2021 when Welte survived a serious ATV accident.

Resulting from a deep desire to give back to those in need, Welte now volunteers as an EMR.

Welte’s story: Inspired by a near-death experience

On January 15, 2021, Welte and his wife, Laura, were involved in a near-death ATV accident that left them both in critical condition. Laura was airlifted to safety, while Welte was transported by UTV. He recalls the professionalism and dedication of the BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) and Nanaimo Search and Rescue (SAR) teams.

“Their expertise and care were nothing short of life-saving,” he says. “The pain management provided by the BCEHS was crucial. Without it, an already horrific experience would have been unbearable.”

Welte’s mission as an EMR, inspired by the care he and his wife received, is to provide the same humane pain management care to others in their time of need. As a volunteer with SAR, he recognized the importance of being well-equipped with advanced skills and knowledge and so decided to pursue his EMR certification.

After six months of study and training, Welte passed the EMA exam and earned his license. Today, he volunteers with SAR, responding to emergencies at least once a week, including swift water rescues and community mental health calls.

“This certification is just the beginning,” Welte emphasizes. “I’m committed to continuous learning and improvement so I can offer the best care possible to those in need.”

How realtors are empowering youth and making a difference at Camp Choice BC https://realestatemagazine.ca/how-realtors-are-empowering-youth-and-making-a-difference-at-camp-choice-bc/ https://realestatemagazine.ca/how-realtors-are-empowering-youth-and-making-a-difference-at-camp-choice-bc/#respond Thu, 29 Aug 2024 04:01:35 +0000 https://realestatemagazine.ca/?p=33988 “The impact of their work extends far beyond the camp, as the lessons learned and confidence gained will continue to influence these youth for (many) years”

This year, Camp Choice BC brought together a group of realtors who volunteered their time and energy to make a lasting impact on the lives of at-risk youth. In six days, they immersed themselves in the camp experience, leading a series of empowering activities designed to build confidence, leadership and resilience among the participants.

A week of growth and adventure

The camp offered a wide range of activities that were both challenging and rewarding for the youth, including archery and horseback riding. Under the guidance of their realtor mentors, the youth learned to overcome initial fears and embrace the excitement of these activities.

One of the most transformative experiences of the camp was the high ropes course. This physically demanding challenge required the youth to confront their fears head-on, with the realtors offering support, encouragement and guidance throughout the journey.

Breaking through barriers

Another powerful activity was the board-breaking exercise, where youth were encouraged to write down things that were holding them back, whether it was fear, self-doubt or negative influences. With the support of their peers and mentors, they then physically broke through the boards, symbolizing their commitment to overcoming these barriers in their lives.

Tackling tough topics

The camp also provided important educational sessions on critical issues such as drug and alcohol use and self-harm. These sessions were designed to equip the youth with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed decisions and understand the consequences of harmful behaviors. Realtors led discussions, offering a safe space for the youth to ask questions, share their experiences and seek support.

Building leaders for the future

The camp also featured classroom sessions focused on leadership development. Led by the realtors, these sessions emphasized the importance of communication, teamwork and problem-solving. Through interactive exercises and discussions, the youth explored what it means to be a leader and how they can apply these lessons in their communities.

As well, realtors shared their own experiences, offering insights into how the skills learned at camp could translate into real-world success.

A commitment to community

Facilitators John Patricelli, Phil Moore, Xyrina Gutierrez, Celia Chiu & Chelsea Wiseman

Phil Moore, the camp’s vice chair and mentor, notes that realtors’ involvement in Camp Choice BC is a testament to their deep commitment to giving back to the community. “By taking time out of their demanding careers to mentor and guide these young people, they are making a profound difference in their lives,” he highlights.

“The impact of their work extends far beyond the camp itself, as the lessons learned and the confidence gained will continue to influence these youth for years to come. The camp continues to be a place where young people can discover their potential, build lasting friendships and develop the skills they need to succeed.”
